President Duterte will Resign if former Senator Bongbong Marcos wins Electoral Protest

The palace confirmed that President Rodrigo Duterte would resign from his position if his political ally and former Senator Bongbong Marcos wins his electoral poll protest against Vice President Leni Robredo.

It was confirmed by Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque on Thursday, saying that Duterte considering to leave Malacanang, but the President doesn’t want Robredo to be his replacement.

“If there’s a better leader or if there’s a qualified leader to take over and he has said that Senator Bongbong Marcos is one of the better-qualified leaders to succeed him,” Roque said.

“if there are developments and he will win the protest and he becomes vice president, yes, he will make true on his word,” he added.

Marcos filed an electoral protest against Robredo after the latter only won a small margin against the former Senator.

However, later on, Roque said that Duterte’s resignation when Marcos won the protest is only a ‘conclusion’.

“That is a conclusion that you can make,” Roque said.

Roque said that the President was afraid that if he followed the constitutional succession, the person who would replace him might be ‘unqualified’.

The spokesperson also said that the President can also file a leave and let Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea do his job temporarily.

Several days ago, Duterte suddenly talked about his early retirement in politics saying that he prefers a ‘military junta’ than letting Robredo replace him because he doesn’t believe in the abilities of the Vice President to lead the country.

Duterte said that he’s tired in solving the problem in corruption, labeling his fight as ‘endless’.

He even called Robredo’s hometown, Naga City as ‘shabu hotbed’ pointing out that the Vice President might not solve the proliferation of illegal drugs in the country.

Yesterday, Duterte also announced that he wanted Marcos or Senator Chiz Escudero to replace him.

“I think deep in my heart, if you follow the succession and Robredo takes over, she can’t handle it. That’s my honest opinion. I wish it were someone in the likes of Escudero or Bongbong Marcos,” Duterte said.
